MUSKOGEE - U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Westville, announced today he will seek re-election to Congress. “I am more determined than ever to challenge the status quo in Washington D.C. and fight for our way of life here in Oklahoma.”
“I will never stand by and allow career politicians to win the fight. I am a citizen legislator and I will stand every day against the career politicians and the special interests bureaucrats who want to over-regulate our lives and rob us of our freedom.”
Mullin was first elected in November 2012. He has cast numerous votes defending conservative principles, including: repealing Obamacare, protecting Second Amendment rights and defending the most vulnerable in our society – the unborn. Mullin was named to the American Conservative Union’s House ACU Conservatives list after receiving a high ranking from the well-respected group based on votes cast during Mullin’s first year in office.
A private sector business owner, Mullin first ran for office because he got fed up with government being his company’s biggest competitor. Mullin has been a vocal leader in the U.S. House of Representatives for reigning in overreaching federal regulations and mandates.
“As a business owner, I know how high the hurdles are that our nation’s businesses face trying to keep the doors open, let alone create the jobs that our communities or our country need,” Mullin said. “We need more active business people in Congress because we understand what it really takes to create jobs.”
“I know a few things about getting out of debt and balancing a budget, because I have had to do that with my own company,” Mullin said. “When I first took over Mullin Plumbing, we were half a million dollars in debt. I had to make tough decisions and work hard, but today we employ more than one hundred Oklahomans and we are completely debt free. It’s a completely different story in Washington, D.C. Our national debt stands at over $17.5 trillion, and it grows by the minute.”
Over the years, career politicians have demonstrated they are unwilling to reign in federal spending because they are afraid to upset one voting block or another. “I came to Washington, D.C. after building a successful business. It is easy for me to cast the votes to cut spending because my life is not built around being a politician or climbing a political ladder. We owe it to the generations that come after us to balance the budget, to reduce wasteful spending and to put a halt to the government intrusions into our personal decisions, our businesses and our religious freedom.
During his first term in office, Mullin made communication and accountability a cornerstone of his office – holding three rounds of in-person town hall meetings in each of the 26 counties that make up the Second District as well as eight telephone town hall meetings. Additionally, Mullin has instituted monthly mobile office hours in every county of the district, where his team brings the Congressional office to each county at the same date and time every month.
“We are very focused on serving the people we are privileged to represent,” Mullin said. “And we plan to continue to find new opportunities to keep citizens engaged in their government.”
Mullin has been married to his high school sweetheart, Christie, for 16 years. They have five children that they raise on the same ranch in Westville, Oklahoma where Mullin grew up.
